iButton readers & probes are used to read and input information from iButtons.
Some readers, such as the iButton Serial Typer, use simple writing software to obtain and write the unique iButton ID in seconds. Other readers, such as the LinkUSBi Touch and Hold can be used to 'mission' or configure iButtons.

When supplied external power, it is the only commercially available iButton Reader able to write to EPROM memory. Under software control, the adapter can be set up for RS-232 data rates of 19200, 57600 and 115200bps. An iButton's temperature data can be read by an Android smartphone via a USB On-The-Go electrical connection. Power supplies edit Apple MagSafe and MagSafe 2 connector-equipped power supplies, displays, and Mac laptops use the 1-Wire protocol to send and receive data to and from the connected Mac laptop, via the middle pin of the connector.
